United Workers Union: a refreshed and modern union website.

United Workers Union represents thousands of essential workers across Australia. This project refreshed selected parts of its website so members could find updates, campaigns and resources more easily.

The challenge

What needed to change.

The existing website held valuable content but needed a design refresh to improve clarity and usability. As the website grew, the homepage and main navigation became cluttered, making it harder for members to find what they were looking for. United Workers Union also needed a new News page to present updates and articles in a more organised and engaging way.

This was not a full rebuild. The project had a fixed, limited scope, so we needed to deliver meaningful improvements without disrupting the existing structure or the content that already worked.

Approach

How the work took shape.

With a limited number of hours to work with, we chose the changes that would deliver the most value to members and concentrated on three areas: the homepage, the main navigation and the news experience. Everything else stayed in place.

Each of those areas was approached as a redesign of what existed rather than a replacement, so the improvements would fit naturally into the framework the union already relied on.

Consistency with the union’s identity mattered as much as the improvements themselves. We worked within the brand guidelines and the reference websites the union provided, so the refreshed pages would feel like a natural evolution of the website rather than a departure from it.

The same care applied on mobile, where the new menu and news layout had to work just as well on a small screen as on a desktop.

The shift

Fixing the three pages members touch most delivered more than a full rebuild would have in the same time.
