IVET: getting everyone on the same page.

IVET Group supports hundreds of schools to deliver VET programs to students across Australia. Its new website had to speak to three audiences at once and stay easy to update from within the organisation.

The challenge

What needed to change.

Founded by teachers in 2011, IVET Group is one of Australia’s leading RTOs and the preferred and trusted partner to hundreds of schools. IVET specialises in supporting and empowering schools to deliver a wide range of VET in Schools programs across the country, and it needed a new website to optimise the delivery of those services.

The old website was not keeping up with the organisation. IVET had been using multiple platforms to manage its content and support material, and had found that inefficient or ineffective.

With three distinct audiences, schools, teachers and students, IVET needed a website that would appeal to multiple targets with a focus on ease of navigation and succinct messaging. The offering is quite corporate, but the largest audience is youthful, and the design had to balance those two requirements.

The suite of programs and services is always evolving, so the website also had to be easy for the IVET team to update at all times.

Approach

How the work took shape.

We began with the homepage, because it had to prove that a corporate offering and a youthful audience could sit comfortably in one design. We provided two possible homepage design directions and IVET chose a clear favourite, which then formed the basis of the rest of the website design.

From there, the design work focused on clear user navigation and user experience, so each of the three audiences could find their own path through the website quickly.

Responsive design and development mattered because IVET’s users reach the website across every kind of device. Bespoke icons and illustrations carried the balance between corporate and youthful visuals through every page.

To replace the multiple platforms IVET had struggled with, the new website was designed to house all the FAQs in the back end, where content editors could control them. We used Oxygen Editor for the front end so administrators can edit and build pages from existing modules and designs without needing a developer.

The shift

Choosing one homepage direction early gave every other page a clear standard to be designed against.
