Refreshing and Modernising United Workers Union Website
United Workers Union represents thousands of essential workers across Australia, and their website plays an important role in keeping members informed, engaged, and connected to updates and campaigns. This project focused on refreshing selected parts of the site to make them more modern, functional, and aligned with the organisation’s evolving digital needs.
The Challenge
The existing website held valuable content but needed a design refresh to improve clarity and usability. As the site continued to grow, the homepage and main navigation became cluttered, making it harder for users to find what they were looking for. United Workers also needed a new News page to present updates and articles in a more organised and engaging way. Because this wasn’t a full site rebuild but a project completed within a block of hours, we needed to deliver meaningful improvements without disrupting the existing structure.
The Approach
Working within the allocated hours, we focused on redesigning the homepage, navigation, and news experience in a way that delivered the most value. The homepage was rebuilt to feel more modern and engaging, with clearer pathways and stronger visual hierarchy to help users find key information quickly. We restructured the main navigation with a cleaner, more intuitive mega menu that made exploring sectors, campaigns, and resources much easier.
To support ongoing communication, we designed and developed a new News page that presents articles and announcements in a layout that feels current, accessible, and easy to scan. Throughout the project, we worked within the Union’s brand guidelines and the reference sites provided to ensure consistency with their existing identity.
The Outcome
The refreshed pages have significantly improved how users interact with the site. The new homepage offers a clearer overview of what the organisation does and highlights important content more effectively. The streamlined mega menu has simplified navigation and reduced friction, allowing users to find what they need without digging.
The new News page provides a dedicated, well-structured space for articles, helping United Workers share updates in a way that feels more professional and engaging. Together, these updates delivered a modern, functional user experience that fits naturally within the existing framework and achieved strong results within a limited project scope.
