Friday Grocer: better value groceries for Melbourne residents.

A Melbourne startup set out to give households a more personal, better value alternative to the big supermarket chains online. It needed an eCommerce website that was as simple to shop as it was to run.

The challenge

What needed to change.

Friday Grocer is a Melbourne startup offering a more personalised, better value alternative to Coles and Woolworths for online grocery shopping. With no overheads from bricks and mortar stores, the business can pass greater savings on to its customers. The brand and desktop designs were already in place; what Friday Grocer needed was a website that could carry the whole operation.

Friday Grocer was established late in 2021 in response to the increased demand for home grocery delivery during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne. To compete with Woolworths and Coles, the team knew it had to offer low prices, a wide range, high quality and free delivery, and also a simple ordering system that did not get in the way.

The range was changing and expanding all the time, so the website also had to be simple for the Friday Grocer team to update themselves. That is where we came in.

Approach

How the work took shape.

With the visual brand and desktop designs established, Friday Grocer asked us to develop the website. We chose a custom WordPress and WooCommerce build focused on user experience and responsive design, so it would be easy to use on every device, and we developed the mobile designs ourselves from the desktop designs the team provided.

Two custom functions were central to the plan: a delivery schedule at checkout and a delivery postcode search, because a grocery customer needs to know straight away whether and when they can be delivered to. We also set up Google Analytics tracking to help the team build its community of customers through social channels.

The shift

Competing with the supermarkets online comes down to how few steps sit between the shopper and the checkout.
